7Stains Mountain Biking

Experience legendary forest trails in the heart of the Scottish Borders

Welcome to 7Stains

The 7Stains trail network has earned legendary status among mountain bikers across the UK and beyond. Located in the forests surrounding Newcastleton, these purpose-built trails offer some of the finest natural singletrack riding in Scotland, combining flowing descents with technical challenges and breathtaking Border scenery.

Built and maintained by passionate local riders and Forestry and Land Scotland, 7Stains has evolved into a must-ride destination for anyone serious about mountain biking. The name comes from the seven burns (streams) that flow through the forest, each adding its own character to this exceptional riding experience.

The Trails

7Stains offers a variety of routes catering to different abilities and preferences. While the network is perhaps best known among experienced riders, there are options for those building their skills as well.

Red Routes - Technical Trail Riding

The red-graded trails at 7Stains are where the network truly shines. These routes feature:

  • Natural singletrack: Flowing trails that follow the contours of the land
  • Technical features: Rock gardens, roots, and challenging sections
  • Rewarding climbs: Earn your descents with sustained forest climbs
  • Epic descents: Fast, flowing downhills through stunning forest scenery
  • Distance: Routes from 15km to 40km+ depending on combinations

The trails are well-marked but require good fitness and solid technical skills. These are natural forest trails that can be challenging in wet conditions.

Skill Development Areas

For those new to mountain biking or working on specific skills, there are areas to practice before tackling the main trail network. These include features like small berms, rollers, and easier sections to build confidence.

Trail Conditions & Best Times to Ride

As natural forest trails, conditions at 7Stains vary significantly with weather and seasons:

Summer (June - August)

Peak riding season with drier trails and longer daylight hours. Trails are generally at their best, though can still be muddy after rain. Busiest period for visitors.

Spring & Autumn (March-May, September-November)

Excellent riding with fewer crowds. Spring offers improving conditions and fresh forest growth. Autumn brings spectacular colors but increasingly wet conditions as winter approaches.

Winter (December - February)

Challenging conditions with short days and often muddy or frozen trails. Recommended for experienced riders only. The trails remain open but require careful judgment about conditions.
