Getting to Kielder from Newcastleton
From Newcastleton, follow signs for Kielder Water and Forest Park. The C200 road takes you through quiet Border countryside and into the forest. The drive is about 25 minutes to Kielder Castle Visitor Centre, or slightly longer to Leaplish Waterside Park.
The route crosses from Scotland into England, though you'd barely notice. Both sides of the border share the same rolling forest landscape. Park at one of the main centres (Kielder Castle, Leaplish, or Tower Knowe) depending on your planned activities.
Walking at Kielder
Kielder offers walks for every ability, from short strolls to full-day hikes.
The Lakeside Way (26 miles)
The marquee walking and cycling route follows the entire 26-mile shoreline of Kielder Water. You don't need to walk the whole thing. Most visitors choose a section, walk one direction, and either return the same way or catch the Osprey Ferry back to their starting point (seasonal).
Popular shorter sections include the stretch from Leaplish to the Belling viewpoint (4 miles return) and the Kielder Castle to Bakethin loop (3 miles). The path is well-maintained and suitable for most fitness levels.
Forest Walks from Kielder Castle
- Duchess Trail (1.5 miles): Easy, accessible loop starting from the visitor centre. Suitable for wheelchairs and buggies on the first section
- Gruffalo Trail: A family favourite with wooden sculptures of characters from the Julia Donaldson books. Young children love it
- Bull Crag Peninsula (6.5 miles): A more substantial walk with 1,000 feet of elevation gain and excellent views across the reservoir
Wildlife Watching
Kielder is home to England's largest population of red squirrels. You'll also spot osprey (seasonal, typically April to September), roe deer, otters, and a variety of woodland birds. The Osprey Watch hide at Leaplish provides nest cameras and volunteer guides during the breeding season.
Cycling at Kielder
The Lakeside Way is also an excellent cycling route, mostly on well-surfaced paths. Bike hire is available at the Alpine Bikes shop near Kielder Castle, which also offers bike washing, lockers, and showers.
For mountain bikers, Kielder has its own trail network separate from the Newcastleton 7Stanes trails. The forest roads and singletrack provide varied riding with fewer crowds than the more famous 7Stanes centres.
Kielder Castle Visitor Centre
The visitor centre at Kielder Castle is the main hub for the forest park. Originally a hunting lodge built in 1775, it now houses:
- Information desk with trail maps and advice
- A cafe serving hot meals, cakes, and drinks
- Exhibition space about the forest's history and wildlife
- Starting point for several waymarked walks
- Toilet facilities and parking
The cafe is a good bet for lunch, especially on colder days when soup and a sandwich hits the spot after a morning walk.
Activities for Families
Kielder is particularly good for families with children:
- Gruffalo Trail: Engaging for children aged 2-8
- Play areas: Adventure play equipment at Leaplish Waterside Park
- Water activities: Kayaking, canoeing, and sailing available at Leaplish (seasonal, booking recommended)
- Art installations: Kielder has a significant collection of outdoor artworks scattered through the forest. Finding them makes an engaging treasure hunt
